Death of Amtrak?

After reading this article, I felt that the trainyless era of America was approaching. Travelers and commuters prefer cars, buses and airplanes as these means save them more money and, in my cases, time.

It’s very simple. For any long trip, it’s much more worthwhile to fly. For shorter trips, though, it might be profitable and convenient… IN WHICH CASE PRIVATE ENTERPRISE CAN TAKE CARE OF IT. And where rail lines aren’t available, bus service is.

There is absolutely no reason that American taxpayers need to continue wasting money on passenger rail service. If Amtrak can’t get themselves to profitability, it’s time for them to disappear.

I only rode on Amtrak once, from Fresno to San Francisco, in my life as I wanted to try an alternative route to Greyhound. The short distance made no difference to the ticket fare, thus I had nothing to complain. However, when I planned for a trip across states a few months later, I had no choice but to choose Greyhound over Amtrak. The only reason was the huge difference in price. So even though I have a soft spot for train rides, I do agree with the author of this post that perhaps train has no business in America.

I stayed in Astoria, Oregon for a few months during last year summer, which also the last year of the Lewis and Clark Explorer Train from Portland to Astoria.
