A Long Way Home: My 6-Month Vagabond Stats

Minivan

Everybody said that I was traveling the world. I think not. Traveling the world, to me, is bumping from one place to another, crossing continents and visiting at many countries as possible, many of which were randomly selected.

I’m not traveling the world as I am going home, a long way home in deed. The 1st home means where I came from before, and where my parents lived. The last home is where I live now. And if it worked out and I crossed to Vietnam from China, the title would be “Home, Home and Home.” It takes so long because I wanted go overland as much as possible. If I had more time, instead of flying in and out of Australia, I would to do it by ships.

The Top 33 Things to Do and See in Hamburg

I tried an experiment last week: working from ‘home’ without actually being at home. A friend of mine, Vladka, whom I had not met in six years was working in Hamburg and suggested I come and see her. Couldn’t afford to lose any more holiday due to my long list of traveling plan for the year but wanted to see Vladka longer than just a weekend trip, I combined work and pleasure. I spent a week in Hamburg, working during the day and sight-seeing in the evening and weekend.

Some ideas on this list are taken from the Couchsurfing website, under the Hamburg section. Some come from my friend Vladka.

Hamburgers at the Opera

I went to the opera yesterday to see “Othello”, a play by Shakespeare later transformed into an opera by Verdi. I completely forgot the entire plot and remembered only the detail when Othello strangled his wife on their bed; listening to the Italian singing and reading the German sub-title obviously didn’t help one bit. Plus, I sat in in a corner balcony on the top floor where a quarter of my view was block by the balcony in front of me. It was a refreshing experience nonetheless, a complete change of routine in my travel.

Four astronauts land on the moon. An American, a German and two Serbs.

The American jumps out and plants a flag on the surface exclaiming that US derring-do and money made their mission possible so the moon will belong to America.

The German pulled out the flag and stuck in a flag from his country proclaiming that it was German scientific knowledge and technological precision that made the landing possible, so the moon was Germany’s.
